A recent survey said that 45 percent of New York University students rely on blogs as a source of information This response comes as a bit of surprise considering NYU’s calling card program is in journalism. Newspapers’ overall penetration of American households has been declining for the past 30 years. Broadcast television executives consider any show that grabs 14 million viewers a breakout hit. Twenty years ago, those same executives would cancel the same show with the same 14 million viewers. Media diaries show consumption patterns that mirror these patterns. Is there really a change in consumption patterns? Do Americans consume more media, or do Americans consume media differently?

If you think about how much media their actually was compared to now, Americans are pretty much forced to consume more media. Reality shows for example are the big thing now. A couple of years ago every network broadcast station had atleast 3 to 4 different reality shows on their primetime lineup. I wouldn’t consider most of those shows “hits” by any means, but because of how large a country we are even a small portion of the population watches these shows which keeps most of them on the air. Another example of ways we consume more media is definitely the internet. Thirty years ago there was no such thing. Alot of information is found online that was not available to people at that time. By the changes in our culture and society, yes we do consume more media now.

I think Americans consume media differently. It is easy to see that many Americans are pressed for time and therefore they do not have the luxury of sitting down with a paper and reading the news as they use to do years before. Americans now rely on the internet to get informtion such as news and updates. I believe this is due in large part to the fact that the internet in convenient. People can check the news or updates on information at their desks at work or at their computers at home. This fact allows Americans to stray away from the previous sources of media, newspapers and television. I remember when I was young my parents would make it a point to read the paper every weekend or watch t.v. every evening before bed. Now due to hecktic schedules and time constraints, my parents never read the paper and I seldom witness them watching any type of t.v. program on a regular basis. My parents do use the internet to a great extent everyday though. They use the internet to check e0mail, news, and work updates. This is just one example of a family whose media consumption has changed greatly over the past few years.

I think that Americans do consume media differently than they used to. Most Americans lead busy lives and do not have as much time for the numerous television shows that air every day. I think some people have taken advantage of television shows being available online and through itunes and some just quit watching t.v. With everything that is available online, who needs to spend the money on a newspaper or magazines? I read the news online usually so that I can pick and choose what it is I want to read (rather than hear). My mom still reads all the newspapers that are delivered to the house but my dad reads everything online. I beleive technology is really the reason why media consumption has changed.

I feel that American both consume more media as well as consume it differently. Because there is so much media out there Americans can not help but to consume it more. It is everywhere from the internet to television so most people consume some sort of media everyday. As well as the large increase in Americans consumption, they are also viewing media in much different ways. People are now watching TV shows that are online or have been recorded prior. People are able to gain information through many different sources they can check news online, through a cell phone or choose the old way and pick up a news paper. Americans are consuming more and different types of media because basically they just have more options.

I think that people are both consuming more media and consuming it differently these days. There are just so many more ways to receive information today than there were 20 years ago or even 5 years ago. People no longer rely on the morning paper and the evenig news. You can have a infinite well of information available at your disposal with a laptop or cell phone. Who knows where we will go from here.

I feel Americans are consuming media differently than in the past simply because of technology. Due to the fact, that a person can find anything on the web, it is no surprise to me that the various mediums of print continue to decline. I feel that the decline in the number of people watching television is declining because of the internet as well. Furthermore, I also feel people are so busy these days they are not home long enough to sit down and watch a T.V. show. Then when they do find time to watch T.V. there are 9,000 channels to choose from which is much differnet than it was in the past. In conclusion, I feel, Americans are consuming more media, just in differnt forms.

we have to rely on media! it is a common ground between almost everyone in the US and other countries! if we didn’t have email…how would be send quick information? we would still be sending letters and paying for postage! i have to be honest though, i’ve never blogged before this class! i never really knew what it was so i think it’s interesting that it’s such a big sensation in New York! i mean think about TV! it was a big craze not too long ago and now everything is so high tech it’s not just a TV anymore, now it’s digital and whatever else it is! we don’t use VHS tapes anymore and even DVD are starting to get pushed out of the way for something newer and better! If we didn’t have media we wouldn’t be where we are today! media has connected us with the world; let us know what’s going on with the war and where the best places to travel are! we are a country FULL of media and i woudn’t have it any other way! although i do think little kids sit inside too much and watch TV rather than going outside and playing tag or “looking for lost treasure” in the backyard like we did when we were kids! changing generations i guess! my kids probably won’t even know how to play tag unless it’s on a video game!

We are a generation of quick access information. News and media information used to only be accessed through newpapers or limited 3 biased TV channels. I do believe that newspapers have become less of a media source for our generation beucase they are rarley needed. With the internet, searches and the information avaible in seconds greatly expands the amount of news and media that is avaible. Americans search and get their media form many different sources which I feel is a great change from the past. Media biasm hurts news stories that should be clear and just full of the facts. We now can seek out the real stories instead of hearing a biased view, (FOX). I believe that the new generation of Americans are responsible and involved in what is going on around the world.

I think that Americans have changed their way of viewing media. Now that everyone is going into work earlier and leaving later people have less time to sit down and read the newspaper. Also Americans are always on the move. When they do get a minute to sit down and watch TV, they are on the computer or paying their bills.
Younger Americans who aren’t working yet are getting more and more media everyday. They are watching a lot more TV and are surfing the Internet constantly. They are also reading less, which in my opinion slows down kids learning. I think parents of young kids should not let their children watch and play video games as much as they are doing.

I do not that that Americans consume less media, but with numerous ways to get media today, people have just been doing their consumption in a new form. Relying on blogs or the internet as a source of information can prove to be very inexpensive, but can provide some inaccurate data at times. As someone who conducts research online for at least 20 hours/week, I have found that the only sources of media that can be believed are those that backed up with some evidence. Many other consumption patterns are changing as well. For example, many do not even get a copy of the newspaper at the front door anymore. Instead, they open their notebook computers at the breakfast table and sip their coffee as they read the Wallstreet Journal via wireless internet. Technology has opened the door for numerous different mediums and I do not see any prediction in this let up in the trend at all.

I think people consume media differently nowadays. Due to busy, workaholic schedules people don’t have time for to watch all their favorite shows. Today media consumption is about attention getters. People are more exposed to media now then they were 20 years ago, but because of media clutter and because of an individuals’ time constraints people pay attention to very few messages. And the messages they pay attention to, better be worth their precious time.
However, for those people who have time on their hands, it is much easier to consume media today. Information is much more widely available now compared to 20 years ago.
virginiag1 // April 10, 2007 at 9:43 am |
I think Americans are definitely consuming their media differently then they were twenty years ago. There are so many sources of media out there for us to digest; we are all going to choose the outlet that fits best into our lives. Many people use websites such as CNN.com or MSNBC.com to get their news because you do not have to wait for a certain time to watch a show. This has a huge appeal with our generation because it is hard to find time to sit down and watch the news every night at nine. Also online, blogs have provided another online outlet for people to get their news. Another factor that may cause the decline in television viewers per show could be the huge amount of news programs and channels available. With so many channels to watch news on, the viewer pool is more spread out between them.

I would have to say that Americans just consume information differently. Some read, some listen and some watch. But there is a new group that has started to evolve, and that is the group who will do anything to get the information. The good thing about blogging is that I can be specific as to what type of information I am looking for. I would have to say that this could one of the reasons as to why people are looking to the internet/blogs for more information. I know that is why I do it. Plus who really wants to read about things that does not interest them. I would rather search the internet and find what typeof information I currently need. !!
ricardoc2 // April 11, 2007 at 12:28 pm |
Americans definetley consume media differently today than they did in years past. Newspapers and few news channels were once the only medium that the population would be able to get their daily news. Today we are surrounded with internet access on our televisions, computers, and cell phones. Whether I want to know sport scores or the latest on a murder trial, I can access that precise information on the internet on many different devices. I can pinpoint the info I want rather than sitting and waiting for the news to get to that particular information that I want to know about. I am sure that we will see the death of mediums such as newspapers and magazines in the very near future due to Americans being able to find their precise info through internet enabled devices.
erich1 // April 12, 2007 at 10:19 am |
I simply believe Americans are simply doing what they do best. They are doing what’s readily available, innovative, and easy. I would also say that people do not consume more media; they are only supplied with more channels for consumption. It does not surprise me that most people do not read blogs. To me, they are simply meant for people to vent their feelings for the whole world to see. If I want to learn about something from a non-biased standpoint, I would consult a newspaper or a news website. As far as the television goes, America has become too impatient to wait through commercials and find certain channels to see what they have been wanting to hear about. I believe they have simply moved to the internet where they can easily access whatever it is they wish to find out. So to say they consume more, I would tend to disagree. However, to say they consume differently, I would quickly agree.

I think Americans consume media very differently today than they did in the past. I think this is due to the change in Americans lifestyles over the decades. Most Americans today are working class citizens that dont have time to consume as much media as they did in the past. For example, in the past I watched at least two different TV shows every week on a regular basis. I had my favorite shows and there was no way I was going to miss them! Now because I am so busy with school and work there is no time to sit down and watch TV at all. Americans now use sources such as the internet as a media source. The internet is now made available practically every where you are and it takes about two seconds to check your email, check the weather, and check news updates. Americans are all about the convenience factor these days and that is really why we consume media differently today.
kellis1 // April 17, 2007 at 2:17 pm |
I think Americans consume media much differently than they have previsously. With technology being as advanced as it is today, many Americans use different media outlets than they have in the past. One huge example is the computer and the internet. With news and information being more available on the web, Americans are much more likely to use this media outlet when compared to newspapers. Also i feel that the average American has become much more time conscious than in the past. Now days people are constantly on the go with no time to watch television or read the newspaper. Their consumption patterns have changed. Many Americans only have time to consume certain types of media in certain ways, at certain times that are most convenient for them.
amandaj1 // April 17, 2007 at 2:22 pm |
I think that consumers today are definitely consuming media differently. Now days there are so many different channels of information that consumers can utilize. In earlier times, the newspaper was the sole source of information for consumers, now, television, radio, internet, podcasts, cellular technologies, etc. provide so many different choices to consumers. This explains the drop in newspaper deliveries and television viewing. As stated above, Americans (as well as other citizens around the world) are concerned with convenience and time-saving, and the internet (i.e. blogging) provides them with just that. Television, newspapers, and radio are still utilized although they also cause a time problem with consumers. Why wait for the 5 o’clock news to come on when you get the information from your computer at the drop of a hat?
meascott // April 17, 2007 at 2:31 pm |
I think that now adays people consume more media in different ways. For the most part people get their information from the internet. Most phones now adays give you the option of being able to get news feeds off of them, that doesn’t even include phones such as Trio’s. The availability of information now is so advance and speedy that people are using other forms less and less. For example, the use of newspapers are almost unneeded because of the advancement of the internet. As stated earlier the internet brought a wave of convience to consumers, my question will be the next step for consumers to receive information easily?

I think that Americans consume media differently. If you think about the decline in newspapers read, you should also think of how newspapers are now accessible online. Consider how the normal working employee will get to work around 8am and not leave until 5 or 6pm. Now consider how many of them have kids or pets to take care of as well as, themselves to get off to work. Getting news online is becoming one of the most convenient ways of accessing the news. If you don’t read the newspaper online, perhaps you are watching your Yahoo page update every few minutes to inform you on the latest and greatest things going on at that time. Since many people sit infront of computers and behind desks all day, viewing the news online is an easy and convenient way for them to stay up to date. The paper comes out once a day, while the internet is updated multiple times a day. It’s getting harder for the paper to compete with faster technology. Most of the time I know much of what the newspaper is going to say because of the amount of time I spent reading about it online the day before. I agree with Meascott, between phones and internet, newspapers are just not getting as much hang time.

The consumption of media has definitely changed in the last few years. Given each person consumes media different from the other, it is true that the internet is a more go to source than ever before. People’s lifestyles have changed, everything is fast paced. Very few people now sit down to read the entire newspaper and if they have the chance, some TV in the morning and the evening. In between they are at work for the most part and everyone is always on the computer so it is very easy to keep up with the news online. Plus the news is faster than newspaper and sometimes TV. Kids are on the interent all the time as well and they can see what is going on in the world while still thinking it is cool because they are online. The internet is definitely changing media consumption.
jessicac2 // April 19, 2007 at 6:58 pm |
I think Americans consume media much more differently now, which in turn causes us to consume more media. Think about it, with the internet and how fast computers can process information, type a question in and it’s answered in less than five seconds. Society never used to receive information so fast, or media for that matter. “News travels fast” makes more sense today than it ever has. There are so many circuits for news, current events, information, and gossip to travel through now. And computers have opened up that world for us. Newspapers may not be so popular anymore, but I believe their articles are more researched and informed than they ever have been before. Authors are using the internet to write and it has improved what we typically read each day. I appreciate the technology advancements in our civilization, it has completely altered how we send and receive media which, like I said before, has created more media for us to view and read at a much faster pace.
nicoshas1 // April 19, 2007 at 8:29 pm |
I think that Americans consumer more media because Americans consume media differently. Comparing the number of viewers that watched TV twenty years ago to the number of viewers now doesn’t seem like a logical comparison. PCs did not exist nor impact viewers’ lives twenty years ago. On that note the fact that not just viewers but generally everyone must use a computer has changed the media. People don’t have to watch the news anymore to get it, they can get online. The internet has opened up a whole new channel for marketing and because the internet is basically the primary source for information now, the amount of media has increased and changed. I argue that because people are pretty much forced to use the internet as a form of communication and other things, and that is why Americans consume media differently. Because they consume media differently, aka using the internet, they are exposed to more media than TV or radio could ever generate. So the impact of having to consume information differently has in turn forced American voluntarily or involuntarily to consume more media than ever.
marcusk1 // April 19, 2007 at 8:34 pm |
The media is a major influences in everyones lives, whether they know it or not. America is such a fast pace nation and whatever the fastes tor most conveinent way we can get the information, the better. I am extremely busy with school and everything, the only time I’m able to check the media is during my dead time of the day, when I am waiting for my next class by picking up a newspaper in the BA. Whenever i check my e-mail for the day, I also check the news on the internet to see what is going on in the world and often receive pop-ups of the latest stories.
lesleyh1 // April 20, 2007 at 9:28 am |
I think the consumption pattern of Americans has changed. People want convenient, easy to access products. Many people dont look to the paper print outs to get their news. They are now focused on the internet. I get my news from the internet and front page of big websites like Yahoo! or MSN. It is so easy to access this information and a minute by minute time frame. I can get the latest updates and video footage of anything I want. Many programs are posted online so that the viewer can easily view last nights show without the commercials. Consummers are still searching for the same thing they did 20 years ago, but the internet has made it much more convenient for the busy lifestyle of many Americans.
treyk1 // April 20, 2007 at 3:53 pm |
I vote there is a change in consumption patters and that we consume differently. Look at Americans, it’s not like we’re out doing something physical, we’re still sitting on out butts. We just sit at the computer now instead of in front of the TV. Myself personally, I watch a LOT less TV that I used to, but I’m on the internet enough to make up for it. I never really got into watching the news, but now I don’t get my news from TV at all, I get it from message boards online. I frequent two different boards, one with around 5000 members (local board) and a national one with around 20000 members. I just browse the general section on both of those and I’m caught up on the days events. Rather than channel surfing to find the channel with the best coverage, I just wait for two or three people to post links to online news sites and I’m set.
chrisc2 // April 20, 2007 at 9:43 pm |
I think today we just have more options on how we can get our media. There is everything from, T.V, internet, newspapers…I mean you can even get your media downloaded to your ipod or phone. I believe Americans consume more media today than they did 20 years ago simply because there is more of it. So that would mean that they consume it differently as well. As long as technology keeps gets better we will have better ways of receiving media. I am sure one day, not to far in the future, we will be able to watch T.V. in the glasses that we wear.
